Breast Lift
Introduction
A woman’s breasts often change over time, losing their youthful shape and firmness. A breast lift can rejuvenate your figure with a breast profile that is more youthful and uplifted.
Overview
A breast lift is a surgical procedure performed by a plastic surgeon to change the shape of the breasts, by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue to reshape and support the new breast contour.
You might choose to have a breast lift if your breasts sag or your nipples point downward.
A breast lift won’t change the size of your breasts. However, a breast lift can be done with breast augmentation or breast reduction. A breast lift might also boost your self-image and self-confidence.
Benefits of breast lift surgery
Here are some of the benefits that you can expect from your breast lift surgery:
• Firmer Breast Appearance:
If you experience sagging, your breasts can feel deflated. When we lift the breasts, we provide them with new support so they can maintain that firm appearance.
• Improved Nipple Projection:
If your drooping breasts have nipples that point down toward the floor, a breast lift can help. By reshaping the breasts, we can reposition the nipple-areolar complex, giving it a more natural, forward projection.
• More Attractive Breast Shape:
Deflated breasts can lose the attractive shape you may be looking for in your breast appearance. By lifting the breast tissue, we are able to restore a more attractive and supple breast shape.
prepare for breast lift surgery
In preparing for breast lift surgery you should eat well during the weeks prior to surgery. Crash dieting, over-eating or high alcohol intake can greatly affect your overall health and well-being. A healthy, balanced diet is essential.
Schedule any time off of work, and any support you will need at home in the days following surgery, including housework, childcare, shopping, and driving.
Breast lift surgery may be performed in an accredited office-based surgical center, outpatient or ambulatory surgical facility or a hospital. Be sure to arrange for someone to drive you to and from surgery and to stay with you for at least the first night following surgery.
steps of a breast lift procedure
A breast lift procedure includes the following steps:
Step 1 – Anesthesia:
For most breast surgeries, anesthesia can be provided by various techniques. The choices vary with the type of surgical procedure, your medical history and preferences, and the advice of your surgeon and anesthesiologist.
Step 2 – The incision:
Your surgeon makes an incision around the perimeter of the areola, vertically down from the areola to the breast crease and horizontally along the breast crease. If you have a severe degree of sagging or are getting a breast reduction with your breast lift, your surgeon will likely recommend this approach. This technique results in the greatest lift, but also the most scarring.
Step 3 –Reshaping your breasts :
Beyond lifting, a breast lift can improve the overall shape of the breasts. This enhancement helps in creating a more rounded and symmetric breast contour, tailored to your body’s unique structure.
Step 4 –Closing the incisions :
After your breasts are reshaped and excess skin is removed, the remaining skin is tightened as the incisions are closed. Sutures are layered deep within the breast tissue to create and support the newly shaped breasts. Sutures, skin adhesives and/or surgical tape may be used to close the skin.
Step 5 – See the results:
The results of your breast lift surgery are immediately visible.
recovery after breast lift
After a breast lift, you’ll have some discomfort, swelling and bruising. Your skin may feel tight. These effects get better over time and last about two weeks.
You’ll need to wear an elastic bandage or support bra to minimize swelling and support your breasts as they heal.
If you had drains near the incisions, your healthcare team will remove them a few days after the procedure. Incisions may take several months to heal fully.
Risks and complications of breast lift
Like any other surgery, getting a breast lift comes with its own set of possible issues. Even though these aren’t common, it’s important to know about them so you can make an informed decision. Here’s a list of some risks and complications:
• Anesthesia risks:
Some of the most common symptoms following the administration of anesthesia include mild nausea and dizziness. These symptoms often go away on their own after a few hours. However, some patients may have a poor response to the anesthetic. A qualified anesthesiologist should be able to anticipate a patient’s response early and minimize any life-threatening risks.
• Hematoma:
Excessive, uncontrolled bleeding may occur in very rare occasions following a breast lift surgery. This risk can be greatly reduced if your surgeon has reviewed the patient’s medical history and if the patient has carefully followed the pre-op advice given by the surgeon to avoid certain medications and supplements.
• Infection:
Any time you have surgery, there’s a chance of getting an infection. It’s not common, but it’s a possibility you should be aware of.
• Implant Problems:
If you also get breast implants as part of your lift, those can come with their own issues like wrinkles, leaks, or even ruptures. Sometimes the implant can also get hard, a condition known as capsular contracture.
• Delayed Healing:
Improper closure of the wound, tissue necrosis, or poor wound after care can drastically affect the time it takes to heal post-op. A patient with a history of smoking may be at a higher risk of poor healing. The technique used may also affect the time to heal and fully recover.
• Sagging Returns:
If your skin doesn’t react well to the implants, you might find your breasts start to sag again sooner than you’d like.
• Loss of Sensation:
A temporary change of sensation, feeling of numbness, or a loss of feeling may occur in or around the surgical site (especially around the areolas and nipples due to repositioning). In rare cases, the loss of sensation may be permanent.
• Reduced Under Breast Irritation:
Low sitting or sagging breasts can lead to skin irritation caused by excess skin. During your breast lift, we can also perform a minor breast reduction to reduce the amount of excess breast skin to improve painful chafing
What is the breast lift?
A breast lift, medically known as mastopexy, is a surgical procedure designed to raise and firm the breasts. This is achieved by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue to reshape and support the breast.
How should i prepare for breast lift surgery?
Preparing for breast lift surgery involves several important steps to ensure a smooth process and optimal results. First, consulting with a qualified surgeon is crucial to discuss individual goals, expectations, and any potential risks. Patients should also undergo a thorough medical evaluation to identify any health issues that could complicate the procedure. It is advisable to avoid certain medications and supplements that can increase bleeding, as recommended by the surgeon. In the weeks leading up to the surgery, maintaining a healthy lifestyle through proper nutrition and hydration can contribute to faster recovery.
Where is the incision for a breast lift?
In a breast lift procedure, the incision location can vary depending on the specific technique used and the desired outcome. Typically, the incision is made around the areola, which is the darker skin surrounding the nipple. In some cases, incisions may extend vertically down the breast or along the natural breast fold.
How are breast lift incisions closed?
Breast lift incisions are typically closed using sutures, which may be dissolvable or require removal at a later date. The surgeon carefully aligns the skin edges to minimize scarring and promote optimal healing. In some cases, adhesive strips or surgical tape might also be applied over the incision sites for added support.
When can I see the results after breast lift surgery?
After breast lift surgery, the results typically begin to become noticeable once the swelling subsides. This can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months, depending on the individual’s healing process and the extent of the procedure. However, the final results may not be fully visible until about six months to a year post-surgery, as the breasts settle into their new position and the tissues adjust.
Results
Breast lift results might not be permanent. As you age, your skin will naturally become less elastic. Some sagging might occur, especially if you have larger, heavier breasts. Keeping a stable, healthy weight can help you retain your results.
