Introduction

Fluctuations in weight, growing older and heredity can cause your upper arms to have a drooping, sagging appearance. This condition cannot be corrected through exercise. Arm lift surgery may be suitable to solve the problem of sagging lower part of the upper arms.

arm lift surgery

Overview

An arm lift, or brachioplasty, is a surgical procedure that reduces excess sagging skin that droops downward, and tighten underlying muscle and tissue to reduce the appearance of aging, sagging skin due to natural aging or significant weight loss.

Arm lift can be combined with an arm lift. The results of an arm lift will be a smoother, slimmer arm contour. An arm lift is not recommended for women who have had breast surgeries that may have contributed to permanent arm swelling.

Benefits of arm lift surgery

There are many benefits of arm lift, here are some of them :

Prevent rashes and skin irritation:

A loose skin can cause uncomfortable rashes and skin irritation. The folds of the skin constantly cause friction against each other during movement.

This can lead to chaffing, skin irritation, and rashes. An arm lift eliminates skin folds on the upper arm by removing the loose skin.

It improves the arm shape:

Excess skin and fat can make the upper arms look bulky. This may limit a person’s clothing choices. Arm lift surgery can improve the size and contours of the upper arms by getting rid of loose skin and fat deposits.

After the operation, most patients notice their arms look sleeker, firmer, and more toned.

Promotes good hygiene:

As mentioned before, loose skin on the upper arm can cause skin folds. These folds retain moisture because they are protected from the open air.

This makes skin folds a perfect breeding ground for foul-smelling bacteria or fungal infections like candidiasist. An arm lift can prevent these breeding grounds from developing by removing loose skin and making it easier to stay clean.

It may reduce excess sweating:

Removing excess skin folds during brachioplasty surgery may help some patients sweat less. Sweat glands are found throughout the skin.

Cutting away the excess skin means there are fewer sweat glands. Fewer sweat glands mean less perspiration during physical activity.

It may enhance your comfort during exercise:

After losing a substantial amount of weight, many people have excess upper arm skin. In severe cases, the skin folds can rub together, causing friction and discomfort during exercise.

For these patients, removing loose skin folds and tightening the skin envelope during an arm lift surgery can eliminate rubbing and painful sensations so they can begin leading more active lives.

prepare for arm lift surgery

Preparing for arm lift surgery is crucial for a successful outcome. First, ensure you have a thorough consultation with your surgeon to understand the procedure and what to expect.

It’s essential to discuss your medical history and any medications you’re currently taking. Creating a comfortable recovery space at home can help you after the surgery.

Stock up on supplies like ice packs and comfortable clothing. Remember to arrange for someone to assist you during your recovery, as you’ll need help with daily tasks.

steps of arm lift procedure

An arm lift procedure includes the following steps:

Step 1 – Anesthesia:

Arm lift is performed under either local or general anesthesia, depending on the extent of the procedure.

Step 2 – The incision:

In the arm lift procedure, the incision length and pattern depend on the amount and location of excess skin to be removed. Incisions are generally placed on the inside of the arm or on the back of the arm and may extend from the underarm (axilla) to just above the elbow. Excess fat may be directly excised or treated with liposuction.

Step 3 – Closing the incisions:

The incisions will be closed either with absorbable sutures, or stitches that will be removed within one to two weeks following your arm lift.

Step 4 – See the results:

The final results are apparent almost immediately following your procedure, although there will likely be swelling and bruising. Your new upper arm will be dramatically improved both in appearance and feel.

recovery from arm lift surgery

recovery after arm lift

Arm lift recovery time is usually 1 to 2 weeks. For a quicker recovery, it’s important to follow your post-operative instructions. During your recovery from the surgery, it’s common to have some discomfort. You may experience soreness, swelling, and some bruising.

You will have bandages and dressings over the incision sites, which will need to be kept clean and dry. You may be given a compression garment to wear, which helps to reduce swelling and support the arm as it heals.

In weeks 7,8 after the surgery, most of the swelling will have gone down, and incision sites will be fully healed. You should be able to return to your normal exercise routine and other activities with the permission of your surgeon.

Risks and complications of arm lift

You will be asked to sign consent forms to ensure that you fully understand the procedure and any risks and potential complications. Arm lift surgery risks and complications include:

Anesthesia:

You will have an opportunity to discuss risks with the anesthesiologist prior to surgery. It is very important that you not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before surgery.

Asymmetry:

Sometimes, after an upper arm lift procedure, the arms can look asymmetrical. Perhaps there was more excess skin and fat on one arm to begin with.

Or the surgeon may have removed more excess skin and fat from one arm compared to the other. Minor arm asymmetry isn’t usually a serious issue.

Bleeding:

Bleeding is a risk with an arm lift as it is with any kind of surgery. To reduce the risk of bleeding and bruising, it is recommended that you stay away from any type of medication that can thin your blood for at least two weeks before surgery, like aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil and vitamin E.

Infection:

Infection is also a common risk with surgery. Most patients will receive an intravenous dose of an antibiotic right before their procedure and may be on oral antibiotics for just a few days.

Seroma:

Seroma is a risk with many post-bariactric procedures such as tummy tucks, arm lifts and thigh lifts. These occur because of an interruption of the flow of lymph fluid in the area treated.

This fluid then backs up into the tissue causing swelling and sometimes clear drainage from the incision and may require aspiration, drainage or surgical removal.

Wound breakdown :

it is not uncommon for wounds to gape open a little after surgery and with brachioplasty in particular, there is a delicate balance between a good contour and a tight closure.

This results in some wound breakdown. This means that you will need dressing changes for a little longer than two to three weeks. The wounds will eventually heal well although the scars may be a little lumpy.

Nerve damage :

close to where the operation takes place there are superficial nerves that may be damaged by surgery. The ulnar nerve is a major nerve in your arm and close to the elbow but it would be very unusual if it were to be damaged by surgery.

Abnormal Scarring:

Arm lift scars are inevitable. There will be a scar left behind anytime a surgeon cuts into the skin. The scar is usually placed on the inner aspect of the upper arm.

The exact scar placement may vary. The scar can sometimes be asymmetrical or uneven. The upper arm skin can also sometimes “bunch” due when the incision is closed.

An arm lift, also known as brachioplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to reshape and tighten the upper arms. This surgery usually targets excess skin and fat that can develop due to aging, weight loss, or genetics.

Arm lift incisions are strategically placed to minimize visible scarring. Typically, the incisions are made along the inside of the upper arm, stretching from the elbow to the armpit. This location allows for the removal of excess skin while keeping the scars less noticeable.

Arm lift surgery typically utilizes general anesthesia, which ensures that the patient is completely unconscious and free from pain during the procedure.

During an arm lift surgery, the incisions are typically closed using sutures or staples. The surgeon carefully brings the skin edges together, ensuring a smooth closure to minimize scarring.

The time it takes to see final results from an arm lift can vary from person to person. Generally, patients can expect to see noticeable improvements within a few weeks post-surgery. However, it often takes about three to six months for the swelling to fully subside and for the final contours of the arms to become apparent.

Arm lift recovery time is usually 1 to 2 weeks. For a quicker recovery, it’s important to follow your post-operative instructions. During your recovery from the surgery, it’s common to have some discomfort. You may experience soreness, swelling, and some bruising.

A seroma can develop after arm lift surgery due to the accumulation of fluid in the tissue space left during the healing process. Factors that contribute to this condition include surgical trauma, which disrupts lymphatic drainage and blood vessels, leading to fluid buildup.

Results

Excess fat in the upper arms can affect just about anyone, even if they have reached a healthy weight. Despite diet and exercise. If you have moderate-to-severe arm skin laxity, arm lift surgery is considered one of the most effective solutions.
