Subperiosteal Implants

Subperiosteal Implants Guide in Turkey

subperiosteal implants

Introduction

If you have missing teeth, it is important to have the gaps filled with a bridge or implant to prevent bone loss and shrinkage of the jawbone. Subperiosteal implants may not be as strong as endosteal implants, but they are a better option than ordinary dentures, partial dentures, and bridges.

Overview

Subperiosteal implants are a type of dental implant used to support artificial teeth when there is not enough healthy bone available to support traditional dental implants.

Unlike implants, which are placed directly into the jawbone, subperiosteal implants are placed above the bone and below the gum tissue.

The subperiosteal implant consists of a metal framework that is custom fitted to the patient’s jaw or jaw bone and gum tissue.

The metal framework is placed over the bone and held in place with small metal posts that penetrate through the gum and into the underlying bone.

As the gum tissue heals, it adheres to the metal framework and helps hold it in place.

Advantages of subperiosteal implants procedure

The advantages of subperiosteal implant procedure are as follows:

• No Bone grafting required:

Subperiosteal implants don’t require bone grafting procedures before placement, making the process quicker and less invasive.

• Customizable:

These implants can be custom-made and attached to the patient’s jaw, ensuring a comfortable and natural-looking fit.

• Stable and durable:

Subperiosteal implants anchored to the jawbone using small posts, providing a stable and durable foundation for replacement teeth.

• Suitable for patients with insufficient jawbone density:

These dental implants work well for patients with insufficient jawbone density who may not be candidates for traditional endosteal implants.

• Versatile:

Subperiosteal implants can be used to replace one or multiple missing teeth or support a full arch restoration or full mouth rehabilitation.

• Easy to clean and maintain:

They can be cleaned just like natural teeth, making it easy for patients to maintain good oral hygiene.

prepare for subperiosteal implants procedure

Subperiosteal implants are non invasive procedures, so the preparation process is pretty straightforward. It starts with undergoing a comprehensive exam to assess your suitability, update your medical history, and discuss sedation options.

Prepare your body by getting the rest it needs and fast for 12 hours if you will be going under general anesthesia. It’s also a good idea to make arrangements for a few days after the surgery so you can rest and heal.

steps of subperiosteal implants procedure

The steps of subperiosteal implants procedure are as follow:

Step 1- Analysis:

After the examination, the dentist will ask you a 3D image. The patient’s measurements are taken, photographs are taken, and tooth forms compatible with the desired facial features and skin color are determined. The preparation of the immediate temporary prosthesis to be delivered to the patient at the end of the operation begins.

Step 2- Subperiosteal implant design:

The technical team and maxillofacial surgeon design the subperiosteal implant based on the 3D image of the patient. During the design, the resistance to chewing loads and the contribution of the implant to the aesthetic profile are evaluated and the infrastructure works are completed.

Step 3- Subperiosteal implant production:

After the analysis, the production phase of the implant is started by the technical team. As in cylindrical implants, titanium with high tissue compatibility is preferred as a material.

Step 4- Subperiosteal implant surgery:

It is a comfortable application that can be easily tolerated under local anesthesia, performed by a maxillofacial surgeon who has a good command of the application. Depending on the patient’s preference, it can be easily applied under general anesthesia or sedation.

Step 5- Subperiosteal implant prosthesis:

The fixed temporary prosthesis prepared with the technical team is combined with the implant at the end of the operation and the patient is discharged with new teeth. Following 2 to 3 weeks of soft tissue formation, a fixed permanent prosthesis prepared from porcelain, zirconium or acrylic is made according to the patient’s preference.

Sometimes, the failure or complication rate of a subperiosteal implants can be high. The better way to prevent these issues is to maintain good oral hygiene and religiously follow the post-operative instructions from your oral surgeon.

Some patients may experience swelling and temporary pain in the implant for a few days, and your oral surgeon may instruct you to consume only soft foods for a week or so.

Smoking can also augment your risk of dental implant failure and hence, should be avoided. Make sure, your oral surgeon checks for infection and proper gum growth at your follow-up appointments and remove any stitches if needed.

risks and complications of subperiosteal implants

The risks and complications of subperiosteal implants are as follow:

• Invasive surgery:

The procedure for a subperiosteal implant is more invasive than other types of implants, such as endosteal implants. This can result in more pain, an increased risk of complications, and a longer recovery time for patients.

• Risk of infection:

Since the implant is placed under the gum tissue, there’s a higher risk of infection.

• Limited placement:

Subperiosteal implants are not suitable for all patients. They’re typically only used in cases where there’s not enough bone to support the implant. However, even in these cases, not all patients are good candidates for a subperiosteal implant.
