Gum Disease Treatment Guide in Turkey

gum disease

Introduction

Gum disease is caused by plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that forms on your teeth. If plaque is not removed, it can harden into tartar, which leads to gum inflammation, bleeding gums, and eventually tooth loss.

gum disease treatment

Overview

Gum disease treatment is a wide range of dental procedures. Healthcare providers use these procedures to reduce infection in your mouth and rebuild tissues damaged by periodontal (gum) disease.

Gum disease occurs when plaque and tartar build up on your teeth surfaces. Your gums react to the bacteria in these irritants and become red, swollen and tender. Your gums may also bleed when you brush or floss.

Periodontists (gum specialists) usually perform these procedures. But general dentists sometimes treat milder forms of gum disease.

Benefits of gum disease treatment

There are many benefits of gum disease treatment, here are some of them :

• Healthier gums and teeth:

Gum disease treatment can help keep your natural teeth healthy and strong. In addition, this treatment can also help improve the overall health of your gums, making them less susceptible to infection and inflammation.

• Reduced tooth loss:

In fact, gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. But gum disease treatment can help reduce the risk of tooth loss.

• Reduced risk of oral diseases:

When you have gum disease, your gums are inflamed and can bleed easily. This makes it easier for bacteria to grow in your mouth. Gum disease treatment can help reduce the risk of these problems.

• Improved digestion:

Gum disease has been linked to digestive problems like GERD and gastritis. By getting rid of the bacteria in your mouth with gum disease treatment, you can help improve your digestion.

• Enhanced cardiovascular health:

There is a link between gum disease and heart disease. Getting treatment for gum disease can help reduce your risk for developing cardiovascular problems down the road.

prepare for gum disease treatment

A two f weeks before your surgical procedure, you may need to stop taking certain medications, such as aspirin (Bayer, Bufferin), pain relievers, and blood thinners.

Most dentists advise not smoking or drinking alcohol at least 24 hours before the procedure. Your doctor might give you an antibiotic to take before your procedure to lower your chances of developing an infection.

You should also arrange for someone to take you home after your procedure is finished. The anesthesia or other medications you’ll receive during the procedure might affect your reaction times.

Treatments for Gum Disease

There are a variety of treatments for gum disease, which are divided into surgical treatments and non-surgical treatments.

Some treatments that don’t involve surgery include:

• Professional dental cleaning:

During a typical checkup, your dentist will remove the plaque and tartar (plaque that builds up and hardens on the tooth surface and can only be removed with professional cleaning) from above and below the gum line of your teeth.

• Scaling and root planning:

This deep cleaning is done under a local anesthetic. In this procedure, your plaque and tartar from above and below your gum line are scraped away (scaling) and rough spots on your tooth roots are made smooth (planning). Smoothing these rough spots removes bacteria and provides a clean surface for your gums to reattach to your teeth.

You might need surgery if the tissue around your teeth is unhealthy and can’t be repaired with nonsurgical options.

Some treatments that involve surgery include:

• Flap surgery/pocket reduction surgery:

During this procedure, your gums are lifted back and tartar is removed. In some cases, irregular surfaces of the damaged bone are smoothed to limit areas where disease-causing bacteria can hide. Your gums are then placed so that tissue fits snugly around your tooth.

• Soft tissue grafts:

These can reinforce thin gums or fill in places where your gums have receded. Grafted tissue, most often taken from the roof of your mouth, is stitched into place. That adds tissue to your affected area.

• Guided tissue regeneration:

Guided tissue regeneration is performed when the bone supporting your teeth has been destroyed, this procedure causes your bone and gum tissue to grow.

• Bone surgery:

This can smooth out shallow craters in your bone due to moderate or advanced bone loss. After flap surgery, the bone around your tooth is reshaped so that it’s harder for bacteria to collect and grow.

gum disease after care

While first-stage gum disease usually gets better or reverses after a professional cleaning, proper oral hygiene must be continued at home, or the condition can easily and quickly return.

Avoid excessively hot or cold food and drinks for a few days after treatment. And you should avoid hard foods such as nuts or popcorn that may worsen irritation or get caught in teeth.

Use a salt water rinse a couple of times a day after the first 24 hours. You should maintain healthy brushing and flossing habits.

risks and complications of gum disease treatment

The risks and complications of gum disease treatment are as follow:

• The pain:

During the professional teeth cleaning, patients may experience pain in very different ways. In general, an inflamed gum is more sensitive than a healthy gum.

• Shrinkage of the gum line:

Another complication of gum disease treatment is the shrinkage of the gum line after professional teeth cleaning.

This shrinkage generally leads to the formation of open spaces between the teeth (black triangles) and greater sensitivity of the dental root surfaces to cold temperatures or acidic foods. This greater sensitivity usually goes away after a few months.

• The infection:

The infection resulting from working on the gums is the real risk(as opposed to infection caused by periodontal disease).

Results

Gum diseases are infections found in the structures around the teeth, which include the gums, periodontal ligament and alveolar bone. If not dealt with promptly, then the problem can quickly spread to other tissues, making the situation far more complicated to rectify.
