Breast Implants
Introduction
Breast implants are one of the most popular types of plastic surgery prostheses. Breast implants increase the size of your breasts. Candidates should be in good physical and mental health and have realistic expectations.
Overview
Breast implants, sometimes casually known as “boob implants,” are saline or silicone implants used to increase and improve the size and shape of the patient’s breasts. They are placed under the skin in a surgical procedure in such a way to look like normal tissue.
These implants may be used for breast augmentation, which increases breast size, or breast reconstruction, which rebuilds tissue lost from a mastectomy or from trauma. The implants will vary in size, shape, and even thickness.
Benefits of breast implant surgery
Here are some of the benefits that you can expect from breast implant surgery:
• Breast Implants Boost Your Self-Esteem and Confidence:
One of the greatest reasons why getting breast implants is worth it is the boost in self-confidence patients get following the procedure. Many women who come in for breast implants are incredibly self-conscious about the size and shape of their breasts.
• Breast Implants Give You a Whole New Set of Wardrobe Options:
Many women with small breasts are restricted in the kind of clothing they can buy and wear. If your clothing options have always been restricted because of the size of your breasts, breast implants can open up a whole new world of wardrobe options for you.
• Get Symmetrical Breasts and Nipples:
If you have asymmetrical breasts in which one breast is clearly smaller than the other, it can make you self-conscious and make it difficult to find bras that fit properly. A breast implant can make your breasts completely symmetrical, using surgical precision to make sure there is no difference between the two breasts.
• You Don’t Have to Compensate for Smaller Breasts:
If you’re like many women, you’ve probably tried a push-up bra to give you more cleavage or other tricks to enhance what you have. With breast augmentation, you trade those push-up bras and other tricks for a long-term solution you feel good about.
• Create a More Natural Look:
Women often hesitate to make the decision to augment their breasts because they don’t want to garner too much attention. They are worried the results may look unnatural or be eye-catching in a negative way. An experienced doctor can recommend the right size and shape to enhance your natural image without overdoing it.
prepare for breast implant surgery
Before breast surgery, many questions will flow through your head. This is completely normal. Write down your questions and do not hesitate to discuss them with your surgeon – openly and directly. There’s no reason to be embarrassed or uncomfortable. It is important that you feel confident about your decision
Regular exercise and a healthy, balanced diet are the perfect preparation for your surgery. Of course, you should continue a healthy lifestyle after the operation.
Breast implant revision surgery is typically performed in a hospital or licensed ambulatory surgery setting, and will likely use general anesthesia. If your breast implant revision is performed on an outpatient basis, be sure to arrange for someone to drive you to and from surgery and to stay with you for at least the first night following surgery.
steps of breast implant procedure
A breast implant procedure includes the following steps:
Step 1 – Anesthesia:
The surgery can be done under local anesthesia, where the patient remains awake and only the breast is numbed to block the pain, or under general anesthesia, where medicine is given to make the patient sleep. Most women receive general anesthesia for this surgery. Breast implant surgery can last from one to several hours depending on the procedure and personal circumstances.
Step 2 – The incision:
The type of incision used in breast implant revision surgery will vary depending upon the type of procedures that will be performed. The incision can include, but is not limited to, any of the following:
• Inframammary incision – in the crease under the breast
• Breast lift incision – either vertical incision or Wise pattern incision
• Peri-areolar incision – incision part way or all the way around a areola
Step 3 –Check for symmetry :
Once breast implants are in place, your surgeon checks for symmetry by placing you in an upright position to find out how the implants look when you are seated. If things are okay, the incisions are closed.
Step 4 – Closing the incisions:
Sutures, skin adhesives, tapes or clips close the skin incisions.
Step 5 –See the results :
The final results of breast implant revision surgery will be initially obscured by swelling. It will take at least six weeks for the swelling to resolve and the breasts to feel softer and more natural. In some cases, it can take 6-12 months for the breasts to feel normal.
recovery after breast implant
You should be able to move around soon after having breast enlargement surgery. It can take a few weeks to fully recover from surgery, so you should take a week or 2 off work. You should not drive for at least 1 week.
After 1 or 2 weeks your stiches will be removed (unless you had dissolvable stitches). After 6 weeks: you should be able to return to most of your normal activities. Your scars should also start to fade.
After a few months your breasts should start to look and feel more natural. You may be able to stop wearing your sports bra.
Risks and complications of breast implant
The most important complications and risks of breast implants are as follow:
• Capsular Contracture:
After your breast implant surgery, your breasts will begin to heal and adapt to the presence of the breast implants. A regular part of this process is that the breast tissue typically forms an internal scar immediately surrounding the implant.
In many cases, this tissue forms a capsule that helps hold the implant in place. However, in some women, in some women, the scar tissue around the implant tightens and squeezes the implant. When scar tissue squeezes an implant, it is called capsular contracture.
• Rupture or Deflation:
Breast implants are considered ruptured when a gel implant shell develops a tear or hole. When a saline-filled implant shell develops a tear or hole, it is considered a deflation or leak because the saline solution will be released from implant.
Your breast implants could rupture or leak for several reasons, including: damage by surgical instruments at the time surgery, stress to the implant during surgery that weakens it, excessive force to the chest, trauma, compression during a mammogram, or normal use over time.
• Breast skin necrosis:
After breast implant reconstruction, there may be tissue expander complications or problems with the breast implants. For example, the breast skin might not heal properly. When the blood vessels that supply blood to the tissue are damaged, it’s often because the skin gets thinned out too much when tissue is removed during mastectomy.
If there isn’t enough blood flow to the skin, areas of the skin on one or both breasts can wither and scab. This breakdown and eventual death of tissue is called necrosis.
• Dynamic distortion:
Dynamic distortion (also called animation deformity) is a possible complication that happens with implants placed under part or all of the chest muscle, called under-the-muscle or subpectoral placement. Problems with breast implants under the chest muscle tend to happen because after breast tissue is removed during mastectomy, the skin is in closer contact with the underlying chest muscle.
As the tissues heal, the skin tends to stick to the chest muscle. So when you flex your chest muscle, your breasts might move in unnatural-looking ways. For example, they may appear to pop upward and outward or to shift down. It can sometimes cause pain, and some people say it makes them feel self-conscious.
What are the breast implants?
Breast implants are medical devices used to enhance the size, shape, or contour of a person’s breasts. They typically consist of a silicone or saline-filled shell and are designed for various cosmetic or reconstructive purposes. During the surgical procedure, these implants are inserted behind the breast tissue or under the chest muscle.
What type of anesthesia is used for breast implants?
When undergoing breast implant surgery, various types of anesthesia can be utilized to ensure patient comfort and safety. Generally, general anesthesia is the most common choice, as it allows the patient to be fully unconscious during the procedure.
What are the different types of breast implant incisions?
There are several types of breast implant incisions used during augmentation procedures. The most common incisions are the inframammary incision, made beneath the breast, which allows for precise placement and minimal visibility. Another type is the periareolar incision, located around the areola, which can also provide good concealment. Some surgeons may opt for the transaxillary incision, made in the armpit, allowing for a scar-free breast area.
How are incisions closed in breast implant surgery?
In breast implant surgery, incisions are typically closed using sutures, which can be either absorbable or non-absorbable. The choice of sutures depends on the surgeon’s preference and the specific technique used. After placing the implants, the surgeon meticulously layers the tissue and skin, ensuring the incisions align properly for optimal healing.
When can I remove stitches after breast implant surgery?
After breast implant surgery, the timing for stitch removal can vary based on the individual’s healing process and the surgeon’s recommendations. Typically, sutures are removed between one to two weeks post-operation. However, some stitches may be absorbable, which means they dissolve on their own without the need for removal.
