bone deformity correction

Dealing with bone deformity can be a complex and daunting journey, but advancements in medical techniques have made remarkable strides in correction methods. Whether due to congenital factors or trauma.

Introduction

Overview

Bone deformity correction is a procedure to straighten a bone that is abnormally bent or twisted. After the bone is straightened, the arm, leg, or foot has normal alignment . These deformities can be corrected in two different ways:

All at once during a surgical procedure (called acute correction), or slowly over the course of several weeks or months (called gradual correction).

Causes of bone deformity

There are several reasons for bone deformities, which we will mention below:
• Congenital causes: Bone deformities occur from birth
• Abnormal growth: Bone deformities occur during childhood
• Bone injuries: Bone deformities occur as a result of treating fractures incorrectly

When you decide to have a bone deformity correction surgery, your surgeon may ask you to do some tests, such as blood tests to check your blood levels, and urine tests to check your general health.

Your surgeon may also ask you to have an electrocardiogram to check the electrical activity of your heart, and a chest x-ray to make sure your lungs are working well.

Your surgeon will also ask you to have x-rays and CT scans to see your bones and joints in order to develop the right surgical plan.

steps of bone deformity correction surgery

Bone deformity correction surgery includes the following steps:

Step 1- Anesthesia:

Your surgeon may choose to:

• Numb only the surgical area (with regional anesthesia).
• Numb your body from the waist down (with spinal anesthesia).
• Put you to sleep (with general anesthesia).
• Numb the surgical site only (with local anesthesia).

Step -2- Removal of diseased or damaged bone section:

The surgeon makes a cut through your skin. They use guide wires to outline the area of bone to remove. The surgeon then removes a specific area of bone using a special surgical saw.

Step 4- Closing the gap in the bone:

After the surgeon removes the section of diseased or damaged bone, he close the gap in your bone by bringing the bone edges together.

Step 5- Fixing the bone in its correct place:

The surgeon stabilizes the bone using pins, screws, plates, or rods to align the bone as it heals.

recovery after bone deformity correction surgery

Recovery from bone deformity correction surgery depends on the type of  correction, the specific surgical technique, the amount and severity of your bone damage and your strength and motivation.

You’ll feel soreness at the site of your surgery. You may need a cast, splint or crutches to limit bone and joint movement, and allow your bones to heal in the correct position. You’ll typically wear the cast or splint or use crutches for weeks to a couple of months.

You may need to use crutches for several months if your surgery was on your knee or hip. You’ll have physical therapy to regain your strength and balance.

risks and complications of bone deformity correction surgery

The risks and complications of bone fractures repair surgery are as follow:

• Infection:

Surgical sites can become infected.

• Bone nonunion or malunion:

In nonunion, bones fail to heal together. While in malunion, bones heal improperly, leading to deformity.

• Loosening or migration of hardware:

Plates, screws, or rods used may cause loosening or migration of hardware.

• Joint stiffness:

Post-operative stiffness can develop around joints. This may require physical therapy for improvement.

• Recurrent deformity:

In some cases, the bone can revert to its original shape. This necessitates further correction surgery.
