Mini Gastric Bypass

Mini Gastric Bypass Guide in Turkey

mini gastric bypass

Introduction

There are two different kinds of gastric bypass surgeries: the traditional gastric bypass and the mini gastric bypass. A mini gastric bypass performs the same purpose as a traditional gastric bypass, however the main difference is that it makes the stomach much smaller and reroutes the small intestine.

Overview

The mini gastric bypass surgery involves shrinking the size of your stomach so that you can only eat small amounts of food in one go, aiding weight loss.

Most patients can expect to lose around 60-70% of their excess weight over a 2-year period.

Some may lose a little more, some may lose a little less, but those patients who stick closely to their diet and exercise regularly can expect to lose up to 70% of their excess weight.

Benefits of mini gastric bypass surgery

There are many benefits of mini gastric bypass surgery, here are some of them :

• Reversibility:

The mini gastric bypass is reversible.

• There is only one connection:

Instead of 2 new connections in the traditional bypass, only one is needed. This reduces the risk of certain complications, such as a leak.

• Internal hernias are rarely induced:

This surgery has a lower risk of internal hernias.

Before the mini gastric bypass surgery, the specialist may ask you to follow a particular pre-operative diet in the weeks before the surgery. This diet should be a low-carb, and high-protein diet.

If you smoke, it is crucial to stop smoking before the procedure as it can increase the risk of complications during and after surgery.

Being well-informed, following pre-operative instructions, and having realistic expectations can help the procedure and healing process go more smoothly.

Before having a mini gastric surgery, you should lose your weight as accurately and conscientiously as possible because the more weight you lose before the procedure, the faster your weight loss will increase after the surgery.

steps of mini gastric bypass surgery

A mini gastric bypass surgery includes the following steps:

Step 1- Anesthesia:

General anesthesia is applied during the surgery.

Step 2-Converting the stomach into a thin tube:

In this step the top of the stomach is stapled to form a thin tube (30ml to 50ml in size). The thin tube becomes the new, smaller stomach and is completely separate to the rest of the stomach.

Step 3-Connect the new stomach to the small intestine:

The new stomach is then sewn to a loop of the small intestine, bypassing the first part of the intestine called the duodenum and approximately 150–200cm of the bowel, so that the rest of the stomach and upper part of the small intestine remains in the body but is no longer used for food digestion.

Step 4-Close the incisions:

The surgeon will then close the incisions in the abdominal wall.

recovery from mini gastric bypass surgery

recovery after mini gastric bypass surgery

Recovery after mini gastric bypass surgery usually takes several weeks. after this process, you may experience nausea and vomiting, as well as pain and discomfort in your abdomen.

You should follow a liquid diet for the first 2 -3 weeks after surgery, gradually moving towards solid foods. You can eat soft foods after 2 weeks and return to your regular diet after a month.

Long-term weight loss success largely depends on the patient’s adherence to diet and lifestyle changes. Physical activity is typically limited for the first 2 to 4 weeks after surgery.

risks and complications of mini gastric bypass

The risks and complications of mini gastric bypass surgery are as follow:

• Bleeding:

Usually the bleeding stops itself and isn’t so great that the blood transfusion is needed.

• Internal hernia:

Risk of internal hernia is considerably lower after mini-bypass than after standard gastric bypass.

• Adhesions:

Any procedure in the abdomen can cause adhesions (scar tissue). This can occur any time after the operation and can sometimes cause problems with the bowel getting stuck or twisted.

• Gastro-esophageal reflux:

If reflux occurs post-operatively some patients may require acid-suppressing medication.

• Dumping syndrome:

Dumping syndrome is a group of signs and symptoms that usually occurs due to poor food choices. It is the result of high sugar foods passing too quickly into the small intestine. Symptoms can include cramping, nausea, dizziness, weakness and fatigue.

• Malabsorption of vitamins and minerals:

Low levels of iron, B12 vitamin and other micronutrients can occur even if recommendations for supplementation are followed.

Mini gastric bypass is a type of weight-loss surgery. It involves creating a small pouch from the stomach and connecting it directly to the small intestine. This reduces the amount of food the stomach can hold and how many calories the body absorbs.

Candidates typically include individuals who:

Have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or higher.
Struggle with obesity-related health issues, like diabetes or heart disease.
Tried other weight-loss methods without success.
Are mentally and physically prepared for surgery.

A mini gastric bypass typically involves two main connections in its surgical process. The first connection is established between the small stomach pouch and the small intestine, which allows food to bypass a portion of the stomach and duodenum. The second connection links the newly formed gastric pouch directly to the lower part of the small intestine, facilitating efficient digestion and nutrient absorption.

The size of the new stomach in a mini gastric bypass is significantly smaller than a typical stomach. This procedure typically creates a pouch that holds about 2 to 5 ounces of food.

Dumping syndrome occurs when food moves too quickly from the stomach into the small intestine. Symptoms commonly include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps.

Results

The mini gastric bypass surgery is an effective and well-established procedure which combines some of the properties of a gastric sleeve and a standard gastric bypass. This procedure can be used as a primary weight loss procedure.
